City information
Hey, Welcome to Brussels! This is the capital of Belgium. The city is mainly known for the beautiful Grote Markt and of course Manneken Pis! Do you hear that? People here mainly speak French, but sometimes you can hear them speak Dutch, or even mixed up. That is really Brussels. Although the city belongs to Flanders, it was heavily Frenchified at the beginning of the 20th century. Brussels originated around the 11th century around a harbor on the Senne, a long river that still flows through Brussels here. The name Brussels is derived from 'Broek-Zele'. It means "settlement by the swamp". The largest buildings and avenues are thanks to King Leopold II. He had a great influence on the architecture of the city. The Royal Palace, the Castle of Laeken, the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken and much more were built on his behalf. Many of his riches came from his own colony in Congo. He ruled it with an iron fist, causing hundreds of thousands of victims. Are you ready to explore the city with me?
