Enkhuizen is known as the 'Herring City' because of its past as a center for the herring fishing industry. The city is an important tourist center (marina, Sprookjeswonderland, Zuiderzee Museum) partly because of the extensive and well-preserved historic center. In addition, the town has internationally renowned seed companies and horticulture, as well as a cluster of plastics industry.
