Before we start, a quick overview of the history… When we go for a walk through bustling Maastricht , you will mainly experience the coziness, smell and color of the city. But at the same time you immediately feel the rich history. You see the city walls, old buildings. The first Roman bridge over the Maas was built in the middle of the first century AD and attracted the first real city residents. Soldiers built a fortress between the Vrijthof and the Maas. Within the walls of the fortress, people lived in wooden houses among stone temples and bathhouses. In Maastricht you will be amazed by so many beautiful monumental monasteries, chapels and churches. Maastricht was one of the religious hotspots in Europe in the Middle Ages. Surrounded by safe stone walls, Maastricht grew into a prosperous, lively city in the Middle Ages.
