City information

Welcome to Medemblik ! You are in the oldest city in West-Friesland . Medemblik received city rights in 1289 from Count Floris V of Holland, who then had West-Friesland under his leadership. Fun fact: the name Medemblik may have come from the Medemelake watercourse that took place here and is mentioned in a charter from 985. It also mentions Medemblik itself as villa Medemelacha .
This peat river that used to be Villa Medemelacha has actually completely disappeared, but a small part is still left and is now known as the Kromme Leek and flows into the IJsselmeer.
Medemblik was an incredibly important city in the past of Noord-Holland , as resistance against the 'Frisians' and for trade! You can still see many traces of this in the old town. Many traces of wealth can be seen in the beautiful facades and details such as the stone in the 17th-century cheese weighing house, which depicts merchants with scales. Or the cow's head that hangs on the facade of the ancient butcher's shop. So don't forget to look up! Medemblik is today known for its historic character with the old town and castle, but also for the Olympic sports. Olympic water sports enthusiasts sail and train in the regatta harbor and it is therefore regularly a huge spectacle! Discover Medemblik with one of my tours, and I'll show you the most beautiful parts of the city!
