The Roman Empire, with Rome as its capital, was a large empire. Even one of the largest in history. At its peak, in the second century AD, it included all the countries around the Mediterranean Sea, but also present-day England, the Netherlands and Germany were part of the Roman Empire.After the fall of the Roman Empire, around 500 AD, the city of Rome fell into decline. It was not until after the year 1000 that the city began to grow and flourish again and became the capital of the Papal States under the leadership of the Pope.During this walk we will visit a number of monuments from all these different periods.
