City information

The history of Utrecht begins in Roman times, when it was an important crossroads of trade routes. Around the year 47 AD, the Romans built a fortress here called Traiectum, which means 'crossing place', because of the crossing over the river Rhine. In the early Middle Ages, Utrecht grew into an important religious center. The famous Cathedral Church was founded in the 7th century, and the city grew around this spiritual beacon. Construction of the imposing Dom Tower began in the 12th century, which is now one of the most iconic symbols of the city.
During the Golden Age, Utrecht flourished economically and culturally. The city became a center of art and science. Utrecht University was founded in 1636, making it one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands.
In the following centuries, Utrecht played a role in several historical events, including French rule and the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815.
